OK, so what happens on Journal Days? In a nutshell, this is about giving yourself permission and time to be creative. Over the years many people have attended these classes. I try to create an atmosphere where students feel comfortable to explore, to "play" with the tools and see what they can do. I am giving people an opportunity to experience the peace and joy that comes from being in a creative space/state ….. physically and mentally. Have you ever watched children drawing or colouring? They are totally absorbed by their task. They are experiencing what I call the bliss of being in your creative right brain. Through the structure of a journal one can draw, paint, write, release, dream, vent, concoct anything their heart desires. Play with colour, texture, lines, shapes. Imagine being able to sit down and allowing yourself to just respond to what is pressing in your life at the moment, or to just escape. Let’s learn to be “in” the moment. It’s wonderfully cathartic! For some, writing may never be put on the page. Each individual will discover what kind of expression works best for them. Although this is NOT a class, and it certainly is NOT a therapy session, you will find that you will develop many skills and explore lots of techniques. After two hours (and the time usually flys) students usually feel relaxed and joyful. I will begin each session by introducing a project. I will give a demo, and then the students will have time to work on the exercise. After some time, I will then add another element to the project and also check to see what everyone is doing. People will be invited to hold up their work so that I can better assess if anyone has problems. We also learn so much from eachother. It's very exciting to work in a group and often wonderful friendships are made. Once I introduce the technique, people are free to lose themselves in their experience. As this is a drop-in experience, for those that attend regularly, they find that their technique skills build nicely over a period of time. What do you bring? A Journal You need to find a journal that fits your style. I will talk about what kind of journals I like to use and why. My preferred journal is a sketchbook with heavier paper, and a hardcover with a binding that allows for the journal to lie flat. If you live near me I will have journals available to purchase at my studio. Cost: $ 20.00 If you live further away, the Peter Pauper Journals are the ones I prefer and carry. Usually you can find them at Chapters/Indigos. The paper works with various mediums well. It lays flat. It has a perforated edge that makes it easy to take out if you decide to frame a page or use it for collage or card making. Here is a link so that you may see it. https://www.chapters.indigo.ca/en-ca/paper/premium-sketchbook/9781441310224-item.html?ikwsec=Home&ikwidx=4#algoliaQueryId=93c978938d20061fba2bdb74d088cd75 Art Supplies: Each week Annie will list the supplies that will be used. Watercolours are almost always involved (it is, after all, Annie's medium of choice!) Because we will explore a variety of mediums of expression over the year, you can count on using things like pencil crayons, sharpie markers, washi tape, stamps, foam stamps we will make with simple tools, x-acto blades and self-healing matt boards for cutting down papers for smaller projects or sweet little handmade books. A variety of papers, including different brands and weights of watercolour paper. Anything done in the journal can be done on finer papers. These classes are a lot of fun and I am sure you will enjoy learning new techniques. Have your favourite tea or coffee ready, and be prepared to enjoy your session.
